Alexa Web Information

This site was also discovered recently by the blogger. It offers statistics on the most popularly trafficked websites, and can be viewed by country. As such it was thought that this source would be valuable in helping information professionals and librarians discover where users in their specific Caribbean country are going for information or spending their on-line time.

The information is from a commercial site and is also not an academic source for information. However it is still useful for evaluating and measuring in a general sense the Internet usage by Caribbean people.

Alexa Internet, is a California-based subsidiary company of Amazon.com that is best known for operating a website that provides information on the web traffic to other websites.
Alexa collects information from users who have installed an “Alexa Toolbar,” allowing them to provide statistics on web site traffic, as well as lists of related links. It uses these data to form Alexa ranking. There is some controversy over how representative Alexa’s user base is of typical Internet behavior. If Alexa’s user base is a fair statistical sample of the internet user population, Alexa’s ranking should be quite accurate. A known source of bias is the self-selecting, opt-in nature of Alexa traffic tracking software installation, but the significance of this bias on rankings is not reported. Alexa ranking measures traffic ranking collected from Alexa toolbar users. High alexa ranking has no relationship with high google ranking, yahoo ranking, and etc.
Ranking in Alexa is significant as it can significantly increase your bargaining power when it comes to selling advertising on your site. If advertisers see that your site has a higher ranking, they are likely to think that they can sell more of their products and services by having a link on your site. This means that you can charge them higher fees for that link.

Alexa calls itself a web information company. No introduction is required to be given about Alexa. Alexa is one of the most prolific search engines more so in the use as against the rest of the world. There are rife speculations on and off that Alexa is a spy ware. The Alexa toolbar is often regarded as a spy ware by many vendors. However, the antivirus company Symantec describes the toolbar as a trackware. Antivirus company McAfee also assigns a danger to the Alexa toolbar. The tests conducted by the former on the Alexa toolbar showed downloads that are thought to be spyware, adware, or other unwanted programs. Apart from McAfee, that has marked Alexa toolbar as Adware-Alexa, a “Potentially Unwanted Program” even other antivirus vendors have done the same.
